Logos + Fine Art
This week we had two projects, the first one being an exploration of logo design. For this project we learned about what goes into the designing and editing of logos. We then had to go through the process of designing a logo for ourselves. I found this to be a rather enjoyable project as learning about the different aspects of logo design was quite interesting, andI am pleased with my final design of a personal logo.
In my initial stages I decided to try a series of designs featuring a J or my middle name, Jade, spelled out. I have been introducing myself and going by my middle name for a few years now and I feel it resembles my identity better. I played around with combining this letter J with the color yellow, with the design of a bee, with the words; honest, homemade + simple, as well as a strong feature of circles in my designs, as I felt all these components related to who I identify as.
In my final design, I utilized aspects from the two more successful compositions of mine, to create this J emblem.
For our other project we were instructed to visit an art gallery (I chose the Albright Knox, as that was what was recommended), and find six artworks to write about.
For the first question: Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
I chose, 'Cycle', 2011, by Sopheap Pich
I chose this piece because it had by far the most visual impact on me. The scale combined with the precision and the beautiful way light interacts with the piece, all came together to leave me speechless. I would've spent all day looking at this piece if I could've.
I also chose, 'Devils Bridge #1, #15, and #7' 2009-2016 by Ebbe Stub Wittrup
This piece was so impactful because of the classical beauty in it, It was also quite an interesting story about people of so many different backgrounds all associating the creation of these bridges with the devil,an all the different stories they have explaining it.
And the second question: Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
I chose, 'Clearing in the Woods', 1865 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
As well as Willard Leroy Metcalf's, 'The White Veil', 1909
I chose these works because I love the Impressionists, their movement, what the stood for and the beauty of their works. Although I am quite partial to Renoir, I also quite enjoy this piece from Metcalf, they both hold such a beautiful quality of light, and the liveliness that nature can usually only show through experiencing it in the flesh. Although these two paintings do a splendid job of transporting you to that experience from in the confines of museum walls.
And for the last question: Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why
I chose, 'This is not a fountain', 20011-13, by Subodh Gupta
This piece's name was inspired by René Magritte's 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe', Gupta did this as he believes his piece speaks to the same themes of gaps between art, and reality that Magritte's did. I would like to know more about the process of collecting these pots and pans, I would like to know more of the stories these people have.
I also chose, 'We The People', 20011-16, by Danh Võ
This piece is actually a detail of a reconstructed Statue of Liberty, that the artist had made in the same fashion that the one that stands in New York City was, however, instead of constructing it, the artist has gifted the pieces of it to different museums and galleries all across the U.S.. This piece touches on the themes of immagrants, ideals, and the preciousness and vulnerability that both contain.
For project #2, the logo and reflection of a gallery visit were completed and shown above. I thought that the logo was well thought out and your process was detailed. The way that your final logo came out was clean, precise and was successful with the use of line. Your design followed all of the directions and effectively used the text and applied it to this project. The comments and details of writing that was provided with the project aided in the steps taken to get the final as well as why it turned out the way it did.
ReplyDeleteThe gallery visit was completed and the necessary amount of photos for each question was reached. I thought that the explanation of each of the artworks that you chose matched up with the questions. I can say that with confidence because I choose some of the same works of art in my reflection as well.

ReplyDeleteI appreciated your thoughts on the artworks you chose, and since I did not choose any of the same ones, it was interesting for me to read your thoughts on them. I also would like to know more about Gupta’s piece since I have been intrigued by Magritte’s work lately. I also really appreciated your photography of the artworks because they made me feel like I was in the room looking at them. Good job!
